Pedro Mateo receives NSF grant
Graduate student Pedro Mateo obtained an NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant for his project "Acquisition of Complex Verb Constructions in Q’anjob’al (Maya)".
Allard Jongman elected ASA Fellow
Allard Jongman, Professor and Chair of Linguistics, was elected Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America for his contributions to the nature of phonetic representations. Presentation of the award will be made during the plenary session of the spring ASA meeting in Baltimore.
William McClure to give talk on October 30th
William McClure, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the CUNY Graduate Center and of Japanese at Queens College, will present his research on Friday, October 30th at 4:00 pm in Alderson Auditorium (Kansas Union). The title of his talk is "Swimming and arriving in Chinese, Japanese, and English". Read the abstract
Diane Kewley-Port to give talk on August 31st
Dr. Diane Kewley-Port, Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Indiana University, will present her research on Monday, August 31st at 3:30 pm in 206 Blake Hall. The title of her talk is "Across-talker effects on non-native listeners’ vowel perception in noise". Read the abstract
Welcome (back) picnic: Friday August 28th
The department will host a picnic for new and returning Linguistics majors and graduate students on Friday, August 28th at 6:00 pm in the North Shelter at Dad Perry Park (near the intersection of Harvard Rd. and Monterey Way). Going west on 6th street, take a left on Monterey Way, followed by a left on Harvard Rd. Then take the first right to enter the park. The Department will provide basic food and drinks. Please bring a side dish or dessert if you like. Like all of our gatherings, this is a very informal event. Please feel free to bring partners and children (there is a playground). Please contact Corinna Johnson (cljohns@ku.edu) if you need to arrange a ride to the park.
Joan Sereno receives NSF grant
Prof. Joan Sereno obtained NSF funding for her project “The contribution of speaking rate, talker and coarticulation to lexical tone processing: Effects of language background and training.” This news was also picked up by the Lawrence Journal World.
Jackson Gandour to deliver the 2009 Frances Ingemann lecture on May 1st
Dr. Jackson Gandour, Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University, will give the second Frances Ingemann lecture on Friday, May 1st at 4:00 pm in Alderson auditorium in the Kansas Union. The title of his talk is "Tones and tunes: a linguist's journey through the brain". Read the abstract
Joan Sereno and family receive the 2009 Outstanding College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Award from Northern Illinois University
Prof. Joan Sereno, her 5 siblings, and her mother together were recognized for their contributions to science, research, and education. For the first time in its history, NIU awarded an alumni award to an entire family. The awards banquet took place on April 23rd 2009. Lynne Nygaard to give talk on April 17th
Dr. Lynne Nygaard, Associate Professor of Psychology at Emory University, will present her research on Friday, April 17th at 4:00 pm in 206 Blake Hall. The title of her talk is "Words, voices, and accents: Perceptual adaptation to lawful variation in speech". Read the abstract
Alison Gabriele to receive Byron A. Alexander Graduate Mentor Award
Prof. Alison Gabriele is this year's recipient of the Byron A. Alexander Graduate Mentor Award. This annual award is given to honor a faculty member in the College who demonstrates exceptional effort, care and guidance in the advisement of his/her graduate students. Prof. Gabriele will be presented with her award at the Graduate School Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 29 from 3:30-5:00 pm in the Jayhawk Room in the Kansas Union.
Kelly Berkson to receive Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
Kelly Berkson, graduate student in Linguistics, is one of five GTAs selected as this year's Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants. Kelly teaches LING 106 "Introductory Linguistics" and LING 700 "Introduction to Linguistic Science". Kelly will be presented with her award at the Graduate School Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 29 from 3:30-5:00 pm in the Jayhawk Room in the Kansas Union.
Jie Zhang receives NSF grant
Prof. Jie Zhang obtained NSF funding for his project "Testing the productivity of Chinese tone sandhi".
Robert Fiorentino receives NIH grant
Prof. Robert Fiorentino obtained NIH funding for his project " Timing and neural bases of complex word recognition: electrophysiological studies".

Jeff Shouse receives Dingwall Fellowship
Graduate student Jeff Shouse received a neurolinguistics fellowship from the William Orr Dingwall Foundation.
Wendy Herd receives NSF grant
Graduate student Wendy Herd obtained an NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant for her project "The perceptual and production (re)training of allophones and phonemes in L2 Spanish".
